  • Sunday, August 1, at 6:15 p.m.: Rumbafrica: Boston's premier African dance band. At the Newton Centre Green.
    Part of the Sunday Heritage Festival
  • Tuesday, August 3, 6:00 p.m. -- Dusk: Hemlock Gorge Reservation Annual Summer Outdoor Concert and Picnic. Join the Friends of Hemlock Gorge at Hamilton Place, Needham, MA (located Central Avenue/Elliot Street). Members and the Public are all welcome! Bring a picnic supper, your chair or blanket. Grill will be provided. Kick back along the Charles River setting and enjoy the music featuring Broken Rose, a talented band performing classic rock and original music.
  • Wednesday, August 4, at 6:30 p.m.: Roy Scott Big Band. 60 years of classic Swing music
    At Pellegrini Park (Rain location: adjacent gym).

  • Sunday, August 8, at 2:00 p.m.: Newton History Museum's "Historic Newton Walks": African-American History in West Newton.
    This walk around West Newton will branch away from the village center to include important sites from the area's African-American community. Dating back to the 1600s, this vibrant population carved out a space from which they asserted their civil and religious rights.
    The tour will meet at Captain John Ryan Park, on the corner of Washington and Cherry Streets. Free.
  • Wednesday, August 11, at 6:30 p.m.: The Red Hot Pokers. www.redhotpokers.net. Roots Rock that's "rockin' and a reelin' with a whole lot of feelin'".
    West Newton Common, Elm & Webster Streets (Rain location: Newton Cultural Center)

  • Sunday, August 22, at 2:00 p.m.: Newton History Museum's "Historic Newton Walks": Workers' Housing and Mill Buildings: Redevelopment in Upper Falls.
    Architect Jane Galli will lead a tour looking at worker housing in Newton Upper Falls in the context of Newton Lower Falls' extensive redevelopment and of New England mill buildings' redevelopment and adaptive-reuse.
    Meet at the northwest corner of Chestnut St. and Elliot St. (You may park in the lot of the office park there.) Free.
